Welcome to The Tangent Website. The Tangent is a Progressive/Jazz Rock Collective led by composer and lyricist Andy Tillison from the North of England. The band has been active for 20 years, released 12 studio albums, 3 live albums and are currrently Sony recording artists via the Progressive Rock label Insideout. They aspire to provide the type of imaginative and cinematic music that was created by the great Progressive bands of the 1970s like Yes, Van Der Graaf Generator, Return To Forever and ELP, yet they are also focussed on being a modern, alert and relevant contemporary band whose musical influences span centuries of progression and whose influences are still being gathered in 2024 from a wealth of styles and sources which did not even exist when their forebears were writing.
It's important to stress that The Tangent is not exclusively providing a nostalgia trip, either musically or lyrically. The band's ongoing philosophy is (in the original spirit of Progressive Rock) a counter-culture philosophy which aligns itself with the concepts of peace, equality, freedom of choice. Many of the original bands were born out of a time of Student protests, the growth of CND, The war in Vietnam and the massive concept of sexual freedom. In 2022 as many of these truly progressive concepts become more at threat from increasingly right wing and authoritarian governments, The Tangent sees its role as a commentary on life in the here and now. And it's a rollercoaster ride.

Rob Gryziec's Media Awareness!
Our news at the beginning of 2026 is that we are too busy to do a full website overhaul!
Right now we are busy in the final mix of our new album, our first recording for White Knight Records. It's simply the most ambitious project we've ever taken on and we will be letting you know all about it in the forthcoming updates to the site.
The band has made its first lineup change of the decade as original bass player Jonas Reingold is replaced by the equally well respected John Jowitt.. whose work with bands like IQ, Jadis, Ark Peter Banks (Yes) and Rain have brought him many awards and recognition. We are very proud to be working with him.
The band will perform at the Fusion Festival in Stourport in Worcestershire on Saturday March 7 this year featuring the full new lineup, augmented by keyboards player Ron Groucutt thus bringing back the band to its original diagram featuring 2 keys players as in the early days. And yes, Theo will be with us! More info further down the page
You read it right! -As a sister/fan release only, Andy Tillison has been working on an album of BRAND NEW recordings of Po90 (Parallel Or 90 Degrees) songs from the first three releases by the band. This will be a limited release CD, and is available direct from this website and White Knight Records
much more information here!
The most recent Tangent album "To Follow Polaris" was released in 2024 - remembering of course the next album is in final production stages now. Polaris was an exceptionally well received album and if you missed it - there's a lot of info still on this site about it and a lot of music to hear
